There are several questions you need to ask yourself:
-What will you be using your camera for? Photos or video?
-How often will you use it/what kind of quality are you looking for?
-What is your budget?
Based on your answers to these questions, you can start narrowing down your search.
For Photography:
If you are going to use your camera for taking photos, there are two main choices: a point and shoot camera, or a DSLR camera. Point and shoots tend to be on the cheaper side, and can still take decent photos, while limiting the controls available. DSLR cameras tend to be larger, and more expensive, but they take good quality photos and allow for lots of manual control.

For Videography:
While point and shoot cameras are capable of taking videos, I don't recommend it, as the video is low quality with little to no manual control.
DSLRs however are quite capable of taking very good video, so the choice between a DSLR and a camcorder is solely based on personal preference.
Camcorders are specifically built for taking good videos, but fail at photos.
If you choose to go with a camcorder, you will need to choose what level you want, which depends on your budget and the performance you are looking for.
The levels are as follows:
Consumer Camcorder:
Range from $100-$500+
These are good for home video and basic productions, however there may not be enough manual controls to suit all your needs. However, it is an affordable choice for videos.
Prosumer Camcorder:
Range from $1000+
This is the in between level. It's between consumer and professional camcorders. These camcorders offer lots manual controls and great quality video, while still being quite portable.
Professional Camcorder:
Range from $10 000+
This is the pro level. Full manual control and studio quality can be expected, though the price is steep. These are camcorders to be invested in for huge productions, but are a little extravagant for home video productions.
